Grand Motets of Michel-Richard de Lalande
Cantate Domino, S72 • Sacris solemniis, S74 • Venite, exultemus, S58

With guest orchestra: Seattle Baroque Collective

Non-reserved seating

King Louis XIV loved glamour, glitter and spending money like it was going out of style; but he hated High Mass! So while he splurged on performers and composers to make music for just about everything that moved at Versailles, the Sun King needed something special for the Low Mass he preferred to attend in the royal chapel. And that's where Michel-Richard de Lalande came in. Appointed to his Majesty after a talent competition, Lalande became a royal favorite and prospered at court for over 43 years, long after Louis' death.

Lalande’s mission was to provide music for the Mass the way the King wanted it, and so he perfected the grand motet—short masterpieces, which became the main form of sacred music in the French Baroque period.

You won’t want to miss the sheer beauty of this noble and refined music, performed on authentic Baroque instruments.
